A crack in the Earth’s crust through which magma and volcanic gases spill to the surface. Solidifying lava and volcanic ash is deposited near the crater, forming a volcanic cone. Volcanoes are most often found near the edges of tectonic plates where magma rises closer to the surface. When the pressure in the magma chamber increases, a volcanic eruption occurs.
