Genetic modification
The alteration of genetic information with the intention to change the characteristics of the resulting organism. Genetic modification may involve omitting a section of DNA, inserting a new section, or replacing a section of DNA with another. Genetic modification occurs naturally during the reproduction of organisms, as spontaneous DNA changes allow organisms to evolve and adapt. However, it can also be done purposefully, e.g. by selective breeding. This is how most of today’s agricultural plants and livestock have originated. Modern technology allows direct intervention in DNA by genetic engineering technologies. They can thus create, for example, plants with higher yields, more resistant to drought or pests.
