A process in which biomass- or fossil-based fuels react with oxygen at high temperatures to produce syngas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane and carbon dioxide, which can be better utilized for energy than the original fuel. Gasification occurs in gasifiers and can use a variety of fuels such as low rank coal, wood, peat or dry agricultural waste.
