The treatment of spent nuclear fuel which recycles the fissile elements contained in the fuel and reduces the amount of high-level waste. There are many reprocessing methods, the most common being PUREX, in which spent fuel is dissolved in nitride acid and uranium and plutonium are chemically separated from the solution. These can be further used as fuel after mixing with fresh uranium.
